Term 3 Music Theory Reflections 2012


Week 1: January 16th 2012 to January 20th 2012

Topic: The Roots and Birth of Jazz
Reflection Question: How did I find the topic of Jazz and how did the teachers do it?
Reflection:
I found the Jazz quite difficult as the lesson started with a Jazz history, but I will keep my best on trying to understand it. The teachers also had performed for me and my classmates an example of improvisation on a Jazz song titled “When the Saints Go Marchin’ in”. I hope that the performance will help me on learning the next lessons. I will also keep in mind that everything I learn in music always has histories behind it.

My progress in learning the roots of Jazz is going to develop well as I have started to understand better. I will keep this good understanding on learning Jazz.

Reflection Question: How did I do my essay and how does it affect me when learning and applying Jazz?
Reflection:
I did my essay well as I concerned that doing this task would not only increase my knowledge about Jazz, but also trained my English writing skill. This essay becomes strong in my mind and I always answer every Jazz question from my essay.

12 bars Blues has basis chords that the lyrics can be played at any style and any creative variation songs. Here, I understand better as I learnt how to make 12 bars Blues song through chords.

Blues is the most played Jazz genre since the early development of early Jazz. From this genre, many other Jazz genre born with a basis from the Blues.

Improvisation is one way to play a free style-music, or can be used to ‘hide’ pieces of song that I forget. As I learned chords and played chorded Blues, I can learn and understand better about how to improvise.

Performing my own 12 bars Blues was my final assessment for this term. This might be a big reason for me that changed my understanding about Blues as I played my own creation 12 bars Blues.
